Seasons of Monster Hunting in the Prairies

[Notes from the field]

“Dealing with the creatures of the temperate grasslands, barrens, and shrublands requires a certain diligence. They have various adaptations in structure and behaviour to deal with droughts; a resilience to go without and also to hold to anything they bite.

Adventurers would do well to train themselves similarly to endure.”

She only blooms in the deep hours from dusk till dawn, most often in trails crossed by black cats, attracting nocturnal pollinators akin to bat and ghostly moth. Colours being muted in the dark, she relies on pale contrast and invisible lines of scent, metallic not unlike drying blood.

Poisonous if ingested, causing euphoria, paralysis, and eventual death; immunity can be built up gradually through exposure. These characteristics make her a favourite in assassin’s kits, crushed and infused into beeswax as a lip balm.

It whispers to you as you go, tempting words like Should, and Always, and Never, that promise security and certainty.

“You should be this.”

“There will always be time for that later.”

“Never enough.”

“This will make you complete.”

And you choose it, the bad path, or you let it choose you. The one where you mindlessly react, the one where you don’t feel your own space or your connection to others. It’s an old thing trying to protect you because that’s what it was made to do.

But the choice is made moment to moment. Each breath is a new chance for awareness. And some moments, you see the flowers bloom, sun shine, and birds chirp, and how everything changes, nothing perishes. And how maybe you have a little more to write after all.

When you wake from this dream, you will be standing in shallow waters.

There’s a moment between tides where the surface is still and the water is a mirror. She’ll appear like a flashed reflection as it starts to rain.

Every love letter you wrote and threw into the ocean, like that self-help book told you to, she would have read them all. And that’s just the start.

Everything you meant to say, to dead relatives, absent friends, vacant exes; they heard every word. All of the things we never will be, all the lost possible selves you mourn, you let them go. This is where we begin to feel at home.

And then you wake for real, only half-remembering the afterimages.

Whenever you hear the rain, you will think of her.

He finds one step leads to the next. Like dancing along the spine of a dragon, the line twists and turns, but it’s all connected.

Our time is defined by meetings and partings from which you can’t escape. You can only move one step after another.

I’ve been an explorer learning a language in a foreign land. The vocabulary has common roots, but expressions take on different meaning.

A développé devant is and is not like a teep push kick.

When I stared down the dreaded blank page to think about the theme of Inspiration for the ArtOrder creative challenge, I looked at the slippers I had started using for cross-training in ballet for my main martial arts practice.

All the styles of movement are related tongues – artistic, combative, locomotive, transformative – If you speak honestly with one, it may reveal something about another that the other has forgotten or hidden.

And each motion is related to some intent or emotion you have to express. It all speaks of connections, mindfulness, and all the ways we hold ourselves back. For me, the concept developed into an illustration, which I was fortunate enough to have selected to be included in this book – INSPIRED.

Each piece has a personal story attached to its creator. It’s, unsurprisingly, an inspiring collection of art and narratives to be involved in.
